UPDATED PETITION STATEMENT
The managed hostel at 28 Nant Hall Road in Prestatyn is facing a critical threat to its future due to obstacles in obtaining necessary planning permission. This crucial community resource provides essential services to some of our most vulnerable residents, offering them a stable and supportive environment during times of need. The loss of this facility would not only affect those who rely on it for a roof over their heads but would also impact the broader community by potentially increasing homelessness and social instability.
This managed hostel has been an integral part of Prestatyn for the past 18 months, providing shelter and support to those without a home. It acts as a beacon of hope for many, giving residents access to essential facilities and services that help improve their quality of life. The hostel has not only served as a home for countless individuals/families but has also contributed to the safety and well-being of the community as a whole.
At its core, the hostel aids in reducing homelessness by offering temporary accommodation and the necessary social services required to help individuals transition to more permanent housing solutions. It is a proven fact that supportive housing reduces homelessness, cuts healthcare costs, and diminishes interactions with the criminal justice system. Shutting its doors would be a step backward for our community and leave many without the lifeline they so desperately need.
We wish to express our deep concern regarding the recent rejection of our planning application, which appears to be based primarily on fear and perception rather than evidence or professional assessments.
Our application is fully supported by Denbighshire County Council's Planning Department, as well as the Homeless Prevention Team, who recognise the essential role our service plays in the local community. Additionally, North Wales Police have raised no objections to the property or its usage.
It is important to clarify misleading statements made by objectors. Of the 24 police attendances reported at the property, 22 were welfare checks – multiple calls related to just a hand of individuals. These individuals were either victims of crime or domestic abuse. The suggestion that these attendances reflect criminal activity or anti-social behaviour originating from our service is factually incorrect and misrepresents the true nature of the police involvement.
Further, the Local Education Authority has confirmed that there have been no safeguarding concerns raised about the premises over the past 18 months, during which the property has operated as a hostel. This is proven evidence that the rejection based on concern of been close to a local school is simply unsubstantiated. The premises has had several children living here that have attended this local school.
Another gripe local councillors and residents have had, is that this was a retrospective planning application. When Together Homes NW Ltd initially bought the premises we engaged with Denbighshire County Council to clarify the lawful use of the building. Physical evidence, such as the presence of a metal stair fire escape, several external flat doors with letterboxes, and a significant volume of mail addressed to individual flats, all suggested historic use as a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO). However, the Council was unable to locate any formal record of the building’s class use.
Given the factual support from statutory bodies and the clear social need this facility addresses, we respectfully request that this application be reviewed with consideration of the evidence provided and not influenced by speculation or stigma.
We are therefore urging local residents, stakeholders, and people in positions of authority to stand with us in support of keeping the hostel open by granting planning approval. Allowing the hostel to continue its operations will not only safeguard the futures of its current residents but will ensure its ability to offer hope and stability to future generations in need.
Together, we can make a difference by securing the future of the Prestatyn hostel. Please sign this petition to voice your support for granting planning permission and help us keep this vital community resource available for those who need it most.
